New Mexico State University (NMSU) is located in a state that grows some of the finest cotton as well as high quality wool, which are significant contributors to the state economy. The university is 35 miles from an international border where many maquilas (twin plants - manufacturing in Mexico; warehousing and distribution in the United States) are located, including those associated with the clothing and textiles industry. Also of note is the large Native American population that includes weavers and jewelry makers. Of further interest in the growing elderly population that often require clothing for special needs. All of these aspects provide the faculty member in this discipline with unique opportunities for research as well as resources for classes.
