Company description:
The Central Power Plant (CPP), constructed in 1914, provides energy services to 130 plus University of Michigan buildings within the Central Campus and Medical Campus complex. These services include steam for heating and air conditioning, electric generation and distribution, hot water and compressed air. The services are distributed via an underground tunnel system on a continuous operation 24 hours each day of the year.
The CPP is configured with combined cycle and simple cycle cogeneration systems optimizing energy production with an efficiency of over 77% producing more than 2.4 billion pounds of steam and 150,000 Megawatt hours of electricity annually. The CPP uses 3.7 billion cubic feet of clean burning natural gas annually as fuel.
A team of 32 specialized and professional people operate and maintain the CPP on a 24-hour basis. The staff is comprised of: Operating Engineers (Operations Department) who monitor and operate the many boilers, turbines and auxiliary systems with a state of the art control system; Mechanics (Maintenance Department) who repair and perform preventative maintenance on the CPP equipment; Instrumentation Technicians (Operations Department) who keep the state of the art operating controls and monitoring instrumentation finely tuned; Chemical Engineer (Maintenance Department) who insures that all supporting systems maintain proper chemical balance. A Results Engineer provides system performance analysis and oversees plant optimization efforts. A managerial, administrative and supervisory staff of nine provides leadership, planning and project management to insure safe and uninterruptible energy services to the Central Campus. http://www.plant.bf.umich.edu/utilities/CentralPowerPlant/
