This chemist is responsible to plan, coordinate and conduct research and development in support of existing and new applications, the development and investigation of new methodologies and general chemical research as applied to company business.
SPECIFIC DUTIES, ACTIVITIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
• Plans, coordinates and conducts scientific research requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection and substantial adaptation and modification of standard scientific techniques.
• Applies an analytical approach to the solution of a wide variety of problems, or applies specialized techniques or ingenuity in selecting and evaluating approaches to unforeseen or novel problems.
• Demonstrates and applies thorough understanding of scientific methods, research protocols, assessment instruments, and data interpretation.
• Designs, performs and/or oversees experiments and data collection to ensure data integrity, quality control and protocol compliance.
• Collects, analyzes, and interprets data, prepares statistical and narrative reports and/or graphs, as appropriate to the specific position, prepares manuscripts for publication, presents research results to scientific conferences and other groups.
• Independently performs most research assignments with instructions as to the general results expected.
• Provides input into proposals including ideas, identifying priorities, providing technical background and reviewing for scientific and technical accuracy.
• Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies. Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
• Maintains a broad knowledge of state-of-the-art technology, equipment and/or systems.
• Serves as principal investigator, as appropriate, on sub-projects of complexities consistent with above criteria.
• May lead, guide, and train customers, staff/student employees, interns. May participate in the recruitment of staff as appropriate to the area of operation.
• Able to travel in the field to support development and customers.
• Able to deploy equipment to customers if required.
• Comply with and ensure department compliance with company health, safety and environmental policies.
• Performs other miscellaneous job-related duties as required.

Education/Training:
• BSc / MSc / PhD from a recognized university in an appropriate field of chemistry or physics.
Experience:
• At least 5 years work experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
• At least 3 years experience with the core technology.
Knowledge/Skills:
• Expertise in Analytical Chemistry and Instrumental Methods with background in IR Spectroscopy.
• Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.
• Knowledge of fundamental analytical instrumentation.
• Knowledge or organic chemistry, analytical chemistry and physics.
• Able to work with teams of people and independently when required.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to effectively interact with business development group, other scientists and customers.
