Sonographer (Vascular) - UK
 

BJUSBM/COL/031108/01 -- Reporting directly to the Principal Clinical Scientist in Vascular Ultrasound the successful candidate will join a strong team and utilise equipment of the highest standards. The role involves independently performing, interpreting and reporting a range of highly specialised diagnostic investigations including Doppler blood flow analysis for Vascular Surgery and other specialities. The post holder will participate in research, trials and clinical audit and will be responsible for training junior members of staff and assisting with managerial duties. The successful candidate will need to have the ability to do both arterial and venous doppler work.


Responsibilities:
• Independently perform, by means of a Colour Doppler Ultrasound Unit and other specialised equipment, a comprehensive range of highly specialised diagnostic duplex ultrasound scans, including carotid, upper and lower limb arterial duplex scans and intracranial cerebral blood flow measurements on patients.

• Perform non-imaging investigations such as invasive and non-invasive physiological pressure measurements.

• Independently interpret findings and provide written and/or diagrammatic reports. Alternatively provide verbal reports directly to the referring clinician.

• Undertake intra-operative and immediate post-operative transcranial monitoring, alerting the vascular surgeons of critical adverse events.

• Adjust and tailor the scope of the investigation depending on the patient’s symptoms and/or pathology found during the course of the investigation.

• Discuss complex technical issues with medical and other staff. This will include advising the clinicians of any limitations that may affect the accuracy of the requested investigation and, where appropriate, recommend alternative diagnostic imaging techniques or modalities.

• Clearly communicate the nature of, and reasons for, the investigation to the patient.

• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and communicate directly with other health professionals, in particular vascular surgeons, diagnostic information directly relevant to the patient’s management.

• Understand the potential hazards and bio-effects of Doppler Ultrasound and be aware of national and international safety guidelines.

• Participate in clinical and scientific research, and medical trials.

• Organisation of clinical and personal workload and that of junior staff. Scheduling patient appointments. Adapting work plans in response to urgent requests or extended procedures such as those influencing operating theatre times.

• Be actively involved in the development of departmental policies and procedures. Implementing strategies that impact both within and outside the department.

• Regularly provide training and teaching to technical and non-technical staff.



Requirements:
• Primary Qualification in Radiography registered with the HPC, UK.
• Postgraduate qualification in Ultrasound.
• Ideally have a number of years experience in vascular ultrasound.
