Graduate Biochemist

Through my degree in Biochemistry and Forensic Science I was able to experience a laboratory environment as the requirement of my degree was completion of a number of laboratory modules. Some of the modules I completed included Biochemistry, Forensics, Toxicology and Research, these modules enabled me to gain some experience within a lab. As a student I had access to a number of different techniques and was able to competently use each of them. These techniques included HPLC, Gel Electrophoresis, and Protein Extraction. I gained most of my laboratory experience when I was completing my personal research project it ran from the beginning of the University term in September finishing in March. This was a 10,000 word project in which I conducted research in the forensic analysis into residues on human hair samples. I extracted the residues in a solution and ran the sample through a HPLC machine, separating the residues into individual components these were then assessed for their forensic capacity. I was entrusted to conduct myself in the appropriate manner within the lab. Once shown how to use the HPLC machine I was trusted to continue my research by myself and produce quality results. Another area of study in my course was Toxicology. It taught me the systems and techniques through which the body processes and eliminates toxins from the body. The module showed the diagnostic procedure to identify the original toxin or secondary metabolite.
